What are barcode symbologies?

Symbologies are different encoding methods for representing the data in bar/space patterns. Although most bar code scanners will read many different types of barcode symbologies, it is usually important to choose the appropriate one for the environment in which the barcode will be scanned. If you are unsure of the symbology that your data should be encoded with, then contact Sandilyam for friendly help and advice.

Where do I obtain my barcode number?

The data that is encoded in the barcode will normally be in a format that meets an international application standard. If you contact Sandilyam and tell them what your barcode is for, then we will be able to inform you of the organization that you will need to contact in order to obtain your number.

Can I have my barcode produced at the size I choose?

There are standards or best practice guidelines with minimum and maximum sizes for the barcode which may limit your choice of size. It is also worth noting that depending on your printing or production method, some size may result in better quality barcodes than others. Sandilyam can help to guide you to the best choice of size and will take these factors into account.

What is a light margin or quiet zone?

Most barcodes require a clear area to the left and right of the bars which must not contain text or other images. Failure to keep these areas clear is a common reason for barcodes failing to scan.

What is a digital image?

A digital image of a barcode is one that can be incorporated into artwork design in a computer application, in a similar manner to other images such as logos or photographs. Barcode images should never be manipulated, however, as a modification to the shape or size can easily result in a barcode that will not scan.

Why is the output resolution important when creating a digital image?

The accuracy of the widths and placement of bars within a digital barcode image are extremely important in ensuring that the barcode scans easily. Low resolution printing equipment can introduce dimensional errors that will prevent a barcode from scanning or, even worse, make it scan and output the wrong data particularly for the smaller size of barcodes. It is therefore very important to use a high resolution output device when imaging or printing barcodes and to select an appropriate size for the barcode to suit the output method and resolution.

How long will it take to have barcode created and sent to me?

On receipt of a validated order and payment, the Barcode Bureau will e-mail your barcode image back to you (or your designer/printer) within a few hours, often within two.

Can the barcode be supplied in various file formats?

The best file format for a digital barcode vector graphic image is Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) because it can define bar dimensions precisely. Bitmap file formats will be less accurate, depending on the resolution with which they have been made and some bitmap formats approximate the image in what is known as lossy compressed formats. If a bitmap format has to be used for some reason then a high resolution TIFF image is probably the best choice.

How do I open the barcode image once it has been e-mailed to me?

The barcode image should not be opened as this might lead to it being changed which is undesirable. A barcode image should simply be placed or inserted into artwork.

Can I use any program to open the .eps file?

The image carried in the .eps file should be placed into a page layout program such as Quark Xpress, Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator as these programmes will allow the vector graphic format to be preserved. Programmes that are designed for modifying images, such as Photoshop, should be avoided.

Is the printing method and substrate important?

Different printing methods and substrates will affect the original bar code image in different ways, particularly in the amount of ink spread that occurs which impacts the dimensional sizes of the printed bars. The colour of the ink used to print the bars and the colour of the substrate will also influence the ease with which the barcode can be scanned. For further advice on this speak to someone at Sandilyam who will be able to help.

My artwork has been printed but does not have a barcode, what should I do?

Labels printed with barcodes can be affixed to products where the artwork did not contain a barcode. Call Sandilyam and ask for the label printing department for a quote and assistance. Alternatively you can e-mail masters@barcodeglobal.com

How do I know my barcode will verify accurately after it has been printed?

You can send your artwork to our Verification Bureau. The quality of the final printed barcode will be checked using the Sandilyam verifier which complies with ISO/ANSI and GS1 standards. A detailed report of the results will be generated and sent to you within 24 hours. For further information, please e-mail compliance@barcodeglobal.com

Sandilyam offers such equipment for sale. Details of our verification equipment can be found at www.barcodeglobal.com or you can call us on +91 80 6598 8333 for further advice.
